On behalf of the Thailand Progressive Jewish Community, I warmly welcome you to join us during the 5787/2026 High Holiday season.
Shalom Chevrei, I am so excited to welcome you to TPJC's High Holiday services and events for the year 5787! This is actually TPJC's 13th year as a community. This means TPJC has now reached its Bar Mitzvah year, which will be a central theme at this year's services. Just as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is an important lifecycle event in a Jewish family, 13 years is an important milestone for our community. Lifecycle events in Judaism, from Brit Milah to B'nai Mitzvah to weddings and funerals, are times of reflection. Whether an event is joyful or mournful, it brings to mind thoughts of L'dor Vador-from generation to generation-where we have been, where we are now, and where we are heading in the future. As daunting as this can be, it's also exciting to think about where we started and how far we've come, not to mention all of the great things that await us in the future. This will, of course, require hard work and commitment from not just our leaders, but our members as well. The board has now formally set up a committee structure, which I encourage you to investigate and join if one of them interests you. Feel free to speak with me or any board member for more details. To lead us through the Days of Awe, we are excited to welcome Rabbi Eliot Baskin and his wife Hilary back to Bangkok. We had a wonderful experience last year under his leadership, and we have been planning a joyous and meaningful High Holidays for community members of all ages. See Rabbi Baskin's message below. As the old Yiddish saying almost goes, "if you enjoyed it the first time, why tempt fate?" Fortunately, this year I don't have to.
I am absolutely delighted to make teshuva-to return to our Thailand Progressive Jewish Community tor an encore High Holy Day experience! | look forward to reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and sharing a holiday season that will inspire us, challenge us, and bring us joy as we usher in the new year together. The new Jewish year, 5787, is especially auspicious for my journey, as 787 is the type of aircraft that will carry me from Denver to your enchanting land of smiles. Together, we will celebrate the wonderful simcha of TPJC's Bar Mitzvah year. I look forward to hearing the stories of our founding members as we kick off this milestone celebration as a kehilah kedosha (holy community). One of the great blessings of Jewish life is that we do not celebrate the New Year by pretending we have everything figured out-much like a thirteen-year-old. Instead, we begin again with open hearts, honest souls, and perhaps a little more wisdom. Together, we embark once more on the sacred journey of teshuva: returning to our best selves, to one another, and to the Holy One. During these Days of Awe, I pray that we may grow deeper together on this journey. May our worship be meaningful, our conversations thoughtful, our laughter plentiful, and our community strengthened by the simple miracle of gathering once again, just as we have for the past thirteen years. At this season of new beginnings, may we all be inscribed for a New Year 5787 filled with community, hope, healing, and positive change. May the only thing sweeter than the apples and honey be the triendships we continue to build together.
